The Samfund: Financial Support After Cancer

Description

A subsidiary of Expect Miracles Foundation, the Samfund provides financial assistance to young adult cancer survivors dealing with the long-term economic impact of cancer treatment. Grants can cover rent, car payments, fertility preservation, reconstructive, dental, or cosmetic procedures related to cancer treatment or continuing education.

Applications open twice a year and are divided into two categories financial assistance and family planning.

Financial Assistance Eligibility 

Who – Cancer survivors aged 21-39 who are US citizens and completed active treatment or have stable disease for at least one year 

When – Opens twice a year. Typically late winter/early spring and late summer/early fall 

Awarded – Typically around $1,500-$1,750. Max amounts per category  Rent/Mortgage – $4,000, Tuition /Continuing education – $3,000, Cosmetic, dental, or reconstructive care – $2,500, Car payments – $1,500 Single bill payment – $1,000

Total Awarded  – Since inception almost $5 million 

Additional Documentation Required – Medical history/verification by healthcare provider, Financial information (ie: income/expenses), Tax documents for recent years, details about how the request relates to post-treatment recovery and financial impact 

Family Planning Eligibility 

Who – Cancer survivors aged 21-39 who are US citizens and completed active treatment or have stable disease for at least one year looking for assistance with IVF, IUI, fertility preservation and storage, adoption fees
or gestational carrier/surrogacy costs

When – Opens twice a year (typically spring and fall) for about three weeks. 

Awarded – Max award of $4,000

Total Awarded  – unsure but the fund has given out close to $5 million since starting
